QWETU SACCO LTD was founded in 1968 by about 200 visionary teachers who pooled together part of their salary as contributions with the objective of growing financially and socially.
Today, the SACCO society has a total membership of more than 34,000, drawn from primary, secondary, and technical schools, lecturers from training colleges, and others from the offices of the president, county government, Ministry of Health, businessmen, KNUT, and Qwetu society’s staff.
In 1976, the society was officially registered and has been regulated by SASRA since 2012. Headquartered in Wundanyi Town, the SACCO has an ambitious plan to raise its membership to over 100,000 members.
Since its formation forty years ago, the SACCO has positively mutated, attaining significant milestones and diverse offerings to its members, including savings accounts, loans, insurance, and investment opportunities.
In 2000, Front Office Service Activities (FOSA) were introduced. A microcredit section was opened in 2003, leading to the opening of the ‘Common Bond', thus incorporating others who were not necessarily teachers.
