The first Sacco in the Diocese of Meru was established in the late 1970s by the late Fr. Salesius Kirianthia. The Diocese of Meru Savings and Credit Co-operative Society, Centenary Sacco, was later registered in 2003.
The idea of having a society was first thought of in 1999 due to the need for convenient, efficient, and fast services. Through the assistance of the bishop and officers from the Ministry of Co-operative Development, the dream was achieved on March 18, 2003, when the Sacco was registered.
The Sacco has seen its membership grow from 800 members in 2008 to over 30,000 members to date. They continue to expand their areas of operation to other major towns, including Chuka Town and Kinoro.
